There are a number of reasons why it might be necessary to extract a tooth.

Whilst we will always do everything we can to keep your natural teeth healthy, there are occasions when removing a tooth is the best option for keeping your mouth healthy in the long term.

Caring for your smile

In the majority of cases, tooth extractions are a simple routine process. Our first priorities are to make sure you’re comfortable, and relaxed and that you understand the reasons why we’ve suggested extracting a tooth or teeth.

If you’re someone who suffers from dental phobia, you will be pleased to hear that we offer sedation at the practice. Sedation is indispensable for helping the most anxious of patients to relax. Once administered, its effects are almost instantaneous, inducing feelings of well-being and deep relaxation.

Read more about how sedation can help you gain confidence in the dentist’s chair here.

Frequently asked questions

When might I need to have a tooth extracted?

Your dentist might need to extract a tooth if:

  • Your teeth are crowded. We may extract crowded teeth prior to treatment with Invisalign.
  • Your tooth is loose due to injury or gum disease.
  • Your tooth is severely infected.
  • Your wisdom teeth are impacted.

Should I replace extracted teeth?

Dental implants are one-way teeth that can be replaced. Implants are extraordinary in their ability to imitate how real teeth function. This is down to the fact that they are surgically placed into the jaw by an implant surgeon.

Will I be comfortable during the process?

Our dentists will proceed with treatment only once they are confident that you feel at ease. Aftercare is incredibly important to us: once your tooth has gently been extracted, we encourage you to contact us if you have any questions once you’re at home and recovering.

A local anaesthetic injection is given at the site of the problem tooth, to ensure you don’t feel a thing throughout the process. It’s completely normal to feel some mild discomfort as the effects of the anaesthetic wear off once you’re back home. This should only last a few hours and your mouth should begin to feel back to normal after a day or so.
