Inlays and onlays restore your tooth’s structure and protect existing damage from worsening, after an injury or decay.

Once an inlay or onlay has been placed, you can live with peace of mind that your tooth is newly fortified and functional again.

What are inlays and onlays?

Inlays and onlays are restorative solutions for repairing a cavity or damage to a tooth. They are tailor-made for your teeth by our dental technician in the dental lab and then cemented in place.

We encourage patients never to miss their routine appointments. The earlier any signs of decay or damage are spotted, the less likely more extensive restorative treatment will be necessary to get your oral health back on track again.

Inlays and onlays: at a glance

  • Provide support to a tooth affected by decay or injury.
  • Redistribute your biting forces for more efficient chewing.
  • Prevent tooth wear.
  • Can be created to blend in with your natural tooth shade.

Frequently asked questions

Can’t I just have a filling instead?

The fundamental difference between inlays and onlays vs fillings is that they’re used when the cavity is just that bit too big for a standard filling. The materials used (including composite, porcelain or gold) are much stronger than those used to create a traditional filling, making them more equipped to keep your tooth healthy.

Is there a difference between inlays and onlays?

Whilst the terms ‘inlay’ and ‘onlay’ are used interchangeably, the difference is that:

Inlays: are placed inside a cavity on your tooth.

Onlays: replace the tips (cusps) of your tooth.

What does the procedure involve?

Having an inlay or onlay involves two dentist visits. Firstly, we will numb the area with anaesthetic and use a drill to carefully remove the decay present. Once your tooth is clean, an impression is created, so that the material used to create your inlay or onlay can be moulded to the shape of your tooth. Whilst you wait for your permanent inlay or onlay to come back from the dental laboratory (generally around a 1 to 3-week wait), we will give you a temporary restoration.

Once your inlay or onlay is ready, we can fit it into place, making sure that it’s a seamless fit for your tooth, before cementing it firmly in position.
